2D or 3D Animation? (film article)

Posted on February 15, 2009 at 5:05 AM

I took my little brother to see Bolt at the drive-in recently, and we had a blast. Needless to say, the following day consisted mostly vacuuming of cornchips out of the car's interior. But it got me thinking how 2D animation has completely disappeared from the silver screen.

When Toy Story came out in 1996, people were blown away, but now 3D or CGI animation has become the norm for kids/family films. And while my initial response to the medium was of pure wonderment, I watch older Disney films like The Lion King or Aladdin and feel so much more immersed in the story. The characters exhibit warm, human qualities that computer graphics have yet to capture. The Simpsons Movie was nothing special, but it was delightful to see hand-drawn images up on the big screen again. On the other hand though, Pixar continue to make great films, drenched with personality, mainly because they treat CGI as a medium for telling a story. Whereas other studios like Fox, Dreamworks and Disney see it as a genre in its own right, to be stuffed with celebrity cameos and pop-culture references that will be dated 5 years from now. Which animation style do you prefer – 2D or 3D?
